I have been teaching at Chalmers Mackay now for 5 years. I specialise in Classical Guitar, for which I just recently acquired the ATCL Diploma from Trinity Guildhall College London. I also teach rock guitar and acoustic. I have a very wide preference in music. I began formal tuition in classical guitar when I was 8 years old, studying first with Paul Holroyd and latterly Marilyn McAnnally. Classical guitar is a very good introduction to disciplined playing, and an excellent way to build good technique. I moved onto electric guitar when I was 10yrs old, and was greatly influenced by players such as John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani. I also enjoy the music of Tommy Emmannuel. I am currently working towards a Diploma in Rock Guitar with Rockschool.
With Rock Guitar I use RockSchool exams as a good basis for building technique and also gaining qualifications for Standard Grade and Higher - in my lessons I also offer pupils the chance to work on their own material whether it be compositions or songs/tunes off C.D.s or MP3 that they bring along - I use computer based equipment for this. I think it is also important that pupils are shown the way to take music up by ear as well as reading music. I use both tab and staff notation to teach with. Most of my pupils are encouraged to take part in the Bands Programme offered at the Music School.
My interests are: Attending concerts to hear/see my idols such as Dream Theater, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Primus, Joe Satriani. I 'jam' with John Pettrucci on a regular basis via my MP3 player! Golf - I am an 8 handicapper and play regularly in the summer. Play Station games!!! Enjoy a good night out with friends.
Guitar is a very fulfilling musical experience but it takes some time to build up good technique - why dont you come along and try it?
