Karen Addison

I was born into a very musical family and started playing piano at the age of 5 being taught by my mum, a highly respected piano teacher. By 15 I had achieved Grade 8 (ABRSM) and by this time had also started playing saxophone.

Whilst a pupil at Bankhead Academy (where my dad was Principal Teacher of music), I became the keyboards player with the school band ‘Northern Lights'. This band went on to become the only Scottish School band to win the prestigious TSB National Rock School competition. This involved performances at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh and Camden Palace in London and various TV and radio appearances. I was also a member of the Bankhead Youth Theatre where I played sax with the band. During my time with BYT I performed with them at numerous venues including HMT Aberdeen and at the Edinburgh Festival.

In 1988 I left Aberdeen to study at Sandown College of Performing Arts in Liverpool. My sax professor there was Leonard Foster, former Principal Clarinettist with Halle Orchestra. The course I studied included Music Education, Performance and Music Therapy.

After graduating, I returned to Aberdeen taking up a post as Music Therapist at Maidencraig House. I then became a full-time instrumental instructor with Aberdeen City Council teaching woodwind at various primary and secondary schools.

This involved me in music centre activities which resulted in me directing the Aberdeen City Schools Jazz Band.

For fun, I performed at night playing sax with the ‘Jive-Bombers' a well known city blues band.

I moved to Hampshire in 2000 where I started teaching piano and woodwind at a private music school. Being a mum with two young children led me at this time to begin my own baby and toddler music programme at the school.

Last year I took up a post with Southampton City Music Services as pre-school music specialist, woodwind instructor and was also given responsibility for curriculum leadership.

I have always been involved in playing and teaching music and have over the years played with numerous bands. I have entertained as a soloist at wedding services/receptions, private and corporate functions and later this year I am looking forward to appearing in London at a celebrity function as a member of a band of professional musicians (including ex members of Mud and Breathe).

I have now moved back to my home in the North East of Scotland and am residing in Inverurie where I am looking forward to my association with the Chalmers Mackay Music School.
